About
Went to Flour and Stone specifically to try the Lemon Dream Cake slice. We were told it would be ready in 20 minutes and to come back to the takeaway store. When we returned, we were disappointed to be told they had sold out. This was frustrating as we had waited and followed instructions. We ended up getting an almond croissant and panna cotta lamington instead. Thankfully, a table had just freed up in the main cafe. The carrot cake was perfectly moist with a balanced spice and creamy frosting that wasnโt overly sweet. Both the cheese & chive and the blueberry scones had a beautiful crumb, crisp on the outside and tender inside. Paired with a smooth, well-balanced flat white, everything tasted freshly made and thoughtfully crafted!
MUST TRY! The BEST lamington Iโve had and the lemon cake was delicious as well! If thereโs one thing to do in Sydney is try a lamington at this bakery. Huge portions making it very good value for money.
Ah, the infamous panna cotta lamington. Even though Iโm from Sydney, I only first heard of this lamington through a Japanese colleague who loved it so much she flew back to Sydney just to eat it again. (I agree, that does sound really privileged). My thoughts? It is good, with nice moisture and texture, and not too sweet. But is it really something to go crazy over and travel here specifically for? In my opinion, no. If you want to aim to try it though: I came around 11am on a weekday and they were still available. Pros: - Itโs not far from the Domain and Art Gallery of NSW - Thereโs a nice assortment of sandwiches/baguettes for lunch, as well as pastries. Cons/be aware of: - The shop is quite tiny and itโs difficult to really sit down and relax here without having to allow others to squeeze past you - Thereโs no toilets and the nearest ones are public toilets about 10min walk away - You donโt need to make a booking but I suspect it will be difficult to get a seat on a weekend or public holiday. It was a bit of a wait & hustle even to get a table for 2 on a weekday in the late morning.
Lovely bakery with some solid offerings. The lamington and chicken pot pie are definitely above average. The croissant, though, felt a little dry and didnโt quite live up to its reputation. The real drawback is the price!! three items set me back $40, which felt steep. Worth a visit if youโre curious, but I wouldnโt recommend it unless you donโt mind splurging
The almond croissant was huge with a generous amount of almonds on top but lacked frangipane filling and was average overall. The panna cotta lamington, however, was outstanding. The panna cotta mix seemed to be spread throughout the sponge, making it creamy and moist while still fluffy. The jam filling was beautiful and the texture was very different from a standard lamington. As we were enjoying our desserts, we noticed a whole Lemon Dream Cake being brought from the takeaway store into the cafe, which was confusing since we had just been told they were sold out. We were finally able to buy a slice, although it was a steep $14 AUD. That said, it was worth every cent. The sponge was juicy and full of lemon flavour, with fluffy toasted meringue on top and thick dollops of lemon curd. Every bite was heavenly and it was easily the best lemon cake we have ever had. Special thanks to our blonde waitress with glasses who was very kind and welcoming. Despite the earlier miscommunication, the service at the cafe itself was lovely.
